Matt was one of the early surf pioneers to search and surf the archipelagos along the west coast of Sumatra in the early 1990s. When he was captaining the Surf Travel Company’s first surf charter vessel in the Mentawai Islands in 1994, there were only three surf boats servicing the entire coast. So in 1995, he built the Manglaui Ndulu in Sulewesi, becoming the fourth. She is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Indonesian wooden vessel afloat today.
