02. Getting to Padang
01. Best Flights / Routes
There are three major cities with connections to Padang (PDG). Coming from Australia, USA, Singapore, Europe or elsewhere you will need to transit through Jakarta (CGK, Kuala Lumpur (KUL) or Singapore (SIN).
If coming via Bali or Jakarta, we strongly recommend flying with Garuda Airlines once inside Indonesia for any domestic flights. Garuda Airlines is recognized as the most reliable and punctual airline in the entire world.
While other carriers might be slightly cheaper or appear to have a more suitable listed schedule, most of the other Indonesian domestic carriers are linked under Lion group and it is very common for flight bookings to be shifted to another airline brand and schedule to suit the broader Lion company’s interests, especially in the afternoon & evening.
Garuda also operate out of the modern terminal 3 facility which is far more efficient and comfortable than the older terminal 1 & 2 buildings. Most major international carriers arrive and depart from terminal 3.
02. Flight & Airport Information
An easy way to search up-to-date flight schedules, for any route on any day is to search “flight (departure city) to (destination city) schedule”. One of the easiest sites to use for available flight options is ‘skyscanner’.
Once you have chosen the route and airline, then you can book your flight via any travel app or direct with the airline company.
Flight options as per below;
Via Jakarta (CGK)
- Traveling from Sydney to Jakarta direct – Qantas fly 7 days a week landing CGK at 1800hrs (overnight JKT hotel required). Or with Garuda 4 days a week (W,F,S,S) landing CGK at 1530hrs in afternoon, allowing time to either stay overnight JKT hotel or transit through to Padang directly.
- Traveling from Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide or New Zealand, best to go via Sydney.
- Other options are to get a cheap flight to Bali (DPS), then 2 x domestic flights from Bali to Padang (DPS > CGK > PDG). Garuda or its subsidiary Citilink are most reliable.
- Coming from Perth direct to CGK 4 days a week (M,W,F,Su) with AirAsia, Batik Air, Lion. However the flight times are quite late at night. If that doesn’t suit, it may be easier to fly via Bali. Perth to Bali flights are many and cheap.
Via Kuala Lumpur (KUL)
- Coming from Sydney direct to KUL can be done with AirAsia. Most flights depart Sydney late evening and land KUL at around 0430hrs allowing good transit to the morning KUL>PDG flight. Although some days it’s a day flight, landing KUL at 1630hrs – requiring an overnight in KL.
- AirAsia also fly from Melbourne (MEL) to KUL, please check latest schedule as it varies between daytime and night flights each week.
- Perth direct to KUL with AirAsia x 5 days a week, some overnight flights and some during the day.
- Via KUL is a good option if coming from Europe, USA or other parts of Asia.
- Malaysia Air operate direct flights between Auckland (AKL) & Kuala Lumpur. You will need to change terminal for KUL > PDG and return.
Via Singapore (SIN)
- Scoot now operate direct flights SIN > PDG return 3 days a week (M,F,Sa). Please note – guests of Latitude Zero and many other operators in the area have had surfboards left behind in Singapore flying this leg. We recommend using one of the other transit routes if you are traveling with surfboards.
