WAVES & SEASONS

Latitude Zero Telo Islands sits right on the equator, largely untouched by the distinct “dry” and “wet” seasons of Bali.

Forget the predictable southeast or west winds, and the left-hander/right-hander seasonal split – here, the weather writes its own script.

In Telo Islands any type of weather can happen on any day of the year, and often all on the same day. While there is annual patterns and vague seasons, these also vary year to year influenced by global weather factors such as Southern Oscillation Index & the Indian Ocean Dipole.

As we like to say: “Anyone who claims to know exactly what the weather will do here hasn’t been here long enough.”

The fickle, hyper-local weather patterns, legendary among sailors, are part of the magic of the fabled Doldrums.

Want to know the best time of year to surf the Telo Islands?

Read below to learn what each season offers and why any time is a good time to surf at Latitude Zero Telo Islands.

January – February –  Tropical perfection

Our favourite time of year is mostly picture-postcard weather with blue skies, light winds and blissfully empty lineups.

You will surf every day in super fun waves around shoulder to overhead at exposed reef breaks, and it is not uncommon to score quality 3-6ft swells. The Indian Ocean rarely goes flat and those very occasional days can happen at any time of the year, not just limited to the summer months.

The sea state is often magic this time of year with perfect boating conditions allowing adventure and exploration to rarely visited and extremely remote corners of the island chain for surfing, diving, fishing and beach combing

  • Mixing surfing with fishing, diving and other water sports and island adventures

  • Those that value comfortable boating on glassy ocean conditions

March – April The sweet spot

Like the summer months, weather is mostly stunning, and we start to see more of those 4-6ft medium sized swells march up the Indian Ocean. As with almost the entire world, these are great months for surfers and Telo Islands is no different.

Most suitable for:

  • All surfers of all abilities and expectations

  • Surfers who love empty or quiet lineups

  • Surfers on longboards and bigger craft

  • Families and groups of families

  • Learn to surf or introducing kids to their first quality waves over mellow and safe reef breaks

  • Conference, wellness retreats and multi-activity trips

  • Mixing surfing with fishing, diving and other water sports and island adventures

  • Those that value comfortable boating in glassy ocean conditions

May – September – Prime surf season

Welcome to prime-time surf season in Indonesia where you are almost guaranteed to score the waves of your life.

Consistent ground swells originating in the winter Roaring Forties deep in the Southern Ocean regularly drench Indonesia, lighting up the world-class reef breaks that make this region so famous for serious surfers.

These large winter swells also wrap deep into every little nook and cranny of the island chain bringing to life sheltered reef breaks and beach breaks in the chest to head high size for those seeking mellower options. There is almost always something for everyone at this time of year.

Other resorts and charter boats are operating but with so much swell on tap and nearly 50 surf breaks in the Telo area you will score.

These months are more likely to have winds grooming the winter swell lines into Indo perfection and higher chance of the odd trade wind pattern reaching the equator temporarily which suits Telo’s many left handers.

Most suitable for:

  • They don’t call it “prime surfing season” for nothing

  • Surfers chasing world class waves and tubes

  • Mates trips

  • Escaping the winter cold back home

  • Always a wave for all levels available

October – December – Empty lineups and festive vibes

As the Southern Ocean heats up heading into summer the XXL swells from the higher latitudes will become less frequent and give way to more manageable 4-6ft swells from the west which is suitable for many of Telo’s world class waves.

North winds generally dominate the weather patterns ideal for Telo’s many right handers.

Most traveling surfers don’t think of Indonesia for these months, and we are mostly surfing empty lineups again. Christmas and New Years Eve is always a highlight at Latitude Zero Telo Islands and perfect for a festive season you and your family will never forget.

Most suitable for:

  • All surfers of all abilities and expectations

  • Surfers who love empty or quiet lineups

  • Surfers on bigger craft

  • Families and groups of families

  • Learn to surf and introducing kids to their first quality waves over mellow and safe reef breaks

  • Conference & wellness retreats

  • A tropical Christmas and New Year getaway

NIAS CULTURE

Nias Culture and the Story of the Telo Islands

Welcome to Ya’ahowu

“Ya’ahowu” is one of the most beautiful and powerful greetings in Indonesia. It is the traditional welcome of Nias, and when you hear it you know you have arrived somewhere special.

The Telo Islands Connection

The Telo Islands, known officially as Pulau Batu Batu, are part of the South Nias Province. Only 35 miles from mainland Nias, the islands share deep cultural roots, traditions and community ties that have shaped this region for centuries.

A Rich and Resilient History

The history of Nias and the Telo Islands is proud and full of resilience. For generations the people here faced slave traders, colonial armies, intertribal conflict and the arrival of the Japanese forces during World War Two.

This long past created a society known for courage, strength and fierce loyalty to family and community.

The Warrior Heritage of Nias

Nias people are famous for their warrior culture. Young men trained early in defence, weapon making and combat techniques. Nias warriors were respected and feared across the region, and the islands were among the last to come under Dutch control.

Headhunting played a major role in traditional life and was a rite of passage for young warriors. Bringing back an enemy’s head allowed a man to marry or sit on village councils. The most skilled wore distinctive neck rings, still used today in traditional ceremonies.

Stone Jumping

Stone Jumping is one of the most iconic traditions of Nias. It was once pictured on the 1,000 Rupiah banknote and continues to be celebrated.

The ceremony marked a boy’s transition into adulthood and required him to leap over a 2.2 metre stone tower with perfect form.

Traditional Beliefs

Before modern religion arrived, Nias and Telo communities followed a belief system with gods above and below. Rituals, offerings and ceremonies helped protect families, honour ancestors and keep harmony between these two realms.

Faith Today

Today most Nias people are Christian, with many communities converting during missionary work in the mid-1800s. They live peacefully alongside a small Muslim population from mainland Sumatra and surrounding regions.

Culture at Latitude Zero Telo Islands

At Latitude Zero Telo Islands we are proud to be part of the wider Nias community and to work closely with local families.

Although life here is peaceful and family-focused today, the strength and spirit of the Nias warrior culture can still be seen in ceremonies, festivals and even in everyday work around the resort.

It is a history that deserves to be remembered, and we feel privileged to share this rich and unique culture with our guests.
